Sunshine Bakeries has its
beginnings in 1930 when Singapore Cold Storage (SCS)
acquired a small facility called Royal Bakery in Geylang.
From the small bakery, SCS expanded its baking facilities
and by 1939 served the whole of Malaya. In the '50s it was
the largest baker in Malaya, producing 22 varieties of bread
with bakeries in Singapore, Penang and Kuala Lumpur. By
1966, more plants were set up in Malacca, Butterworth,
Seremban, Kuantan and Kota Bahru. In Singapore, both Royal
bread and the Sunshine range were household brand names.
A milestone was reached in 1960 when the Royal Bakery was
renamed Sunshine Bakeries. Due to increased demand and the
desire to provide consumers with better products, the bakery
had to be relocated several times. Each time, the move was
to bigger and better facilities. It first moved to Keppel
Road in 1966, and then to Chin Bee in 1981. To keep ahead of
the competition, Sunshine moved to its latest plant in
Senoko. The new bakery was fully operational in November
1992.
In addition to fresh bread from the bakery, Sunshine also
produces ready-made frozen food for sale in supermarkets
through its frozen food division. The range includes frozen
pizzas, garlic bread, pies and pastry.
